GABON COUP: “Africa Needs to Address Root Causes of Coups, Not Just the Symptoms” – Atiku

Former Vice President of the Federal republic of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar in response to the recent surge of coups across the African continent, has urged African leaders to concentrate on tackling the root causes rather than just the visible symptoms.

Atiku conveyed this message through a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday. He was reacting to the eighth coup in Africa since 2020, which occurred in Gabon.

Atiku stressed, “We must condemn the coup in Gabon. Democracy and its governance must be maintained as the favored system, and we should make every effort to establish, foster, and sustain it.”

Pointing out the worrisome trend of eight military takeovers in Central and West Africa since 2020, Atiku called for introspection.
