Pierre Wolnik, a 37-year-old two-time French freefly world champion, has died after his parachute malfunctioned during a jump over the Mont Blanc massif in southeastern France on Saturday, February 7.
His body was located in Les Bossons, near the Chamonix valley. Emergency responders confirmed his death at the scene. Authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Wolnik was a member of the French national team competing in the 2026 FAI World Championships and also worked as a videographer for the Fédération Française de Parachutisme (FFP), where he documented and shared his aerial feats on social media.
The FFP said he would be “remembered as a teammate whose presence will forever be etched in the memories of those around him.” FFP President Yves-Marie Guillaud added, “The entire sport parachuting community mourns a talented young man with such a friendly smile.”
In November, Wolnik shared a freefall clip on Instagram, writing, “Flying high, feeling free. Because up there, everything makes sense.”
