Former Kaduna Gov El-Rufai Shares Progress, Reveals Opposition Coalition’s 2027 Moves

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has shed fresh light on the proposed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, revealing that significant progress is being made toward the formation of a unified political platform.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, El-Rufai confirmed that a decision has already been reached within the coalition to establish multiple committees tasked with engaging existing political platforms and consolidating efforts among various interest groups.

“We’re looking for one platform to all go into,” he said. “A decision was taken to set up committees to engage with existing platforms as well as another committee to get all the efforts together.”

According to El-Rufai, at least three different groups within the opposition coalition have made previous attempts to register their own political parties. However, coalition leaders have urged the groups to harmonise their efforts under a single, unified entity.

“We said, look, come together, harmonise, and come up with one name, one party, one logo, one constitution. They came at the last meeting and briefed us on the name and symbol. That team has now been given the green light to proceed with the registration,” El-Rufai disclosed.

While some stakeholders within the alliance advocate for the creation of an entirely new political party, others prefer to adopt and restructure an existing one to save time and regulatory hurdles.

“Some leaders in the coalition prefer a new party, while some feel we should just go into an existing party and start organizing,” El-Rufai explained. “Because the main battle begins when we have a platform. This is all preliminaries.”
