The federal government of Nigeria has arraigned five suspects in connection with the horrific attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo state, which left over 40 worshippers dead.
The suspects, identified as Idris Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar, were brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday.
They face a nine-count charge of terrorism filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation.
According to the charges, the suspects and others still at large allegedly joined the Al-Shabaab Terrorist Group in 2021.
The government claims they operated a cell in Kogi state, which is an offence under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022.
The prosecution further alleges that the suspects held planning meetings at a Government Secondary School in Kogi and behind a central mosque in Ondo in 2022, leading up to the deadly attack on the church on June 5, 2022.
