A major fire has razed more than 20 makeshift shops at the Yankwalli section of the bustling Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, destroying goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The fire erupted in the evening and spread rapidly through the cluster of temporary structures, catching traders by surprise and causing significant panic in the area. Eyewitnesses reported that the flames engulfed several shops before emergency services could arrive on the scene.
As of Wednesday morning, sections of the affected area were still smoldering, although the blaze had been successfully contained. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, with authorities yet to launch a full investigation into the incident.
Local traders and residents have praised the swift response of the Plateau State Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service, and security personnel, whose coordinated efforts were crucial in preventing the fire from spreading to other, more permanent sections of the market.
