FG Sues 36 State Governors, Seeks Full Autonomy For Local Government Areas

The Federal Government has launched a case in the Supreme Court against the Governors of the 36 States of the Federation due to alleged misbehavior in the management of Local Government Areas, LGAs.

The government is requesting complete autonomy for all Local Government Units (LGAs) in the nation as the third tier of government in the lawsuit with the file number SC/CV/343/2024, which was submitted by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

It particularly asked the supreme court to impose an injunction forbidding state governors from removing democratically elected local government leaders in a unilateral, arbitrary, or illegal manner.

Additionally, an order is requested that permits local governments to receive monies directly from the Federation Account in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution, rather than through allegedly illegal joint accounts established by governors. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
