The Bola Tinubu-led government of President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of the sum of N17 billion for the completion of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway project.
The government made it known that all sections of the expressway are expected to be completed within a time frame of 24 months.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this information while examining the Abuja-Kaduna section of the highway.
Freshreporters News understands that Umahi explained that the government reached this new timeline on account of the agreement it signed with the contractor – Julius Berger Construction Company.
A conspicuous point to note is that the construction minister had promised earlier completion of this road this year but now emphasis has shifted to accomplish it within next two years.
It may be recalled that in October 2022, the then Minister of State, Works and Housing, Umar El-Yakub had said the Kaduna-Abuja highway as well as Zaria-Kano road must be concluded by early 2023 to minimize inconvenience posed on the part of road users.
It would be recalled that in April 2023, the former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has said the previous administration was unable to fulfil its promise due to security challenges faced in 2022 and relocation of some communities along the Zaria segment of the 265km road project.
