The family of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole known survivor of the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash, is torn between relief at his survival and sorrow over the loss of his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, who was also aboard the ill-fated flight.
The 40-year-old Vishwash, was the only passenger believed to have made it out alive after the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad in northern India.
The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers and crew, including 53 British nationals.
Authorities confirmed that at least 24 people on the ground also died when the plane slammed into a canteen building where students were having lunch.
The Ramesh family, based in Leicester, UK, has been inundated with sympathisers since the incident.
The close-knit community on their quiet street has rallied around the grieving household, offering prayers and support.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vishwash at the hospital on Friday, where he is receiving treatment for burn wounds and other injuries. Video footage of the visit was shared on the Prime Minister’s official YouTube channel.
Ramesh while speaking in Hindi to national broadcaster DD News from his hospital bed, said:
