Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called for a more aggressive stance against the spread of fake news, declaring it a critical threat to public trust and the effectiveness of police work.
He issued this directive at the 2025 Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) Conference, emphasizing the urgent need for officers to swiftly counter the viral spread of outdated videos, digitally altered images, and false narratives that are often presented as breaking news.
Egbetokun charged all police spokespersons to implement robust fact-checking protocols and to proactively debunk misinformation before it gains traction. He urged PROs to leverage social media as a primary tool for promoting truth, ensuring transparency, and building stronger bonds with the communities they serve, stating that adept communication is now a cornerstone of contemporary policing.
This heightened focus on combating misinformation comes as the Nigeria Police Force continues to navigate public scrutiny over allegations of misconduct and broader national security challenges.
