A solemn evening of tributes was held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos to honour the life and legacy of Ayo Adebanjo, the late elder statesman and former factional leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group.
Adebanjo passed away on February 14 at the age of 96.
The event marked the beginning of his funeral rites and brought together an array of dignitaries, political figures, activists, and family members to pay their respects.
Prominent personalities in attendance included Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education; Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB); Arunma Oteh, former Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank; and Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. All praised Adebanjo’s lifelong dedication to national unity, justice, true federalism, and the restructuring of Nigeria.
Also present were former governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun and former Minister of Interior).
Other notable attendees included PDP chieftain Bode George; former Lagos governorship candidate Jimi Agbaje; Senator Aminu Tambuwal; Pastor Tunde Bakare; former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah; advertising mogul Biodun Shobanjo; and human rights activist Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin.
