The Former Speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Andriy Parubiy, has been shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities confirmed this on Saturday, 30th August 2025.
Police said they received reports of the shooting in the Frankivsk district of the western Ukrainian city at around midday local time. It remains unclear whether the perpetrator has been arrested.
54 years old Parubiy, was a leading figure in Ukraine’s Maidan movement, which pushed for closer ties with the European Union and ultimately brought down pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the killing as a “terrible murder” and expressed his condolences. In a statement on Telegram, he said:
“The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko have just reported on the first known circumstances of the terrible murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy was killed. My condolences to his family and friends.
All necessary forces and means are being deployed to investigate and find the killer.”
Unconfirmed reports suggested that Parubiy was shot multiple times by a gunman on an e-bike disguised as a courier.
Ukraine’s national police, Lviv Regional police and the security service are jointly investigating the killing.
