Ex-Landlady Claims Victim Stopped Speaking to Her After Abûse Advice

New accounts are surfacing following the death of 29-year-old Olumma Chizoba Lucy Akataobi, who died on Monday, February 2, in circumstances her family alleges was domestic violence.

The victim’s sister, Ezinne Onyedikachi Brenda Akataobi, has publicly accused Olumma’s husband, Kelechi Prince Okeke, of beating her to death. She claims the fatal altercation began over ₦35,000 that a customer had deposited into the husband’s account, which Olumma needed for her business.

The husband has denied any violence, offering a different account. He states that his wife was eating when she suddenly screamed, complained of chest pain, vomited, and collapsed.

Ezinne strongly disputes this version, insisting her sister was in good health earlier that day. She noted that Olumma had visited their mother and later gone to the market to work without any indication of illness.

According to Ezinne, neighbours reported hearing the couple arguing loudly just before Olumma’s death. She shared an alleged voice note from one neighbour who said she was too tired after returning from church to intervene in the quarrel.

As the story spread online, a woman named Joy Maurice commented, identifying herself as a former landlady to Kelechi when he was dating Olumma. She alleged that Kelechi frequently beat Olumma during her visits and that she had advised the young woman to leave the relationship.

“She stopped greeting me after I advised her to leave him,” Joy Maurice claimed. She added that she eventually evicted Kelechi from her property due to his conduct.

Olumma’s death has generated significant public distress, with her family and community members urging authorities to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident.
