Epe council Chairperson empowers 200 farmers with N50,000 cash each

The Chairperson of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Animashaun, has empowered 200 farmers with whooping sum of N50,000 each and distributed essential crops such as maize and sorghum to farmers.

The initiative, held at the Local Government Secretariat hall, Lagos state, is part of the second phase of the farmers’ empowerment programme aimed at enhancing food production in the area.

Addressing the gathering, Princess Animashaun highlighted the program’s objectives to provide financial and material support to farmers.

She said:

“For those involved in fish farming, we would also support them with fishing nets. Similarly, those engaged in livestock farming would receive cash assistance.

“Urging those engaged in aquaculture to be wary of water hyacinths on their ponds to prevent fish deaths. “

The Chairperson highlighted the challenges faced by fish farmers in Epe due to water hyacinths in the lagoon, emphasising the importance of vigilance and prompt removal of the impediment from the local water bodies.

While praising crop farmers for keeping produce prices reasonable, Princess Animashaun expressed concern over the high cost of fish at Olowo market, urging fish farmers to reduce prices for affordability, promising that the third phase of the programme, scheduled for August 2024, would further support fish farmers with necessary tools.

President of the Farmers Association, Alhaja Aminat Shabi, commended the Chairman’s efforts, emphasizing the positive impact of the support on the local farming community.

She said:

“She has completed the first two phases of the programme and has promised a third phase in August 2024. We will use the cash and crops provided judiciously to improve our fish, crop, and livestock farming for the benefit of our community and Lagos State”.
