Emotions ran high in Nigeria’s Senate as Ali Ndume, the Senate Chief Whip, expressed his disappointment in Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s recent misstep. Akpabio accidentally revealed that a “holiday allowance” had been credited to senators’ bank accounts, sending shockwaves across the nation.
During a session before the annual recess, Akpabio shared that a token had been disbursed to lawmakers to help them “enjoy their holidays.” However, the realization that his statement was being broadcast live prompted him to swiftly retract it.
The unintended disclosure sparked a flurry of criticism from the public, accusing the senators of insensitivity to the widespread suffering and challenges faced by ordinary citizens.
In a heartfelt interview with the BBC Hausa service, Ali Ndume expressed his dismay at Akpabio’s behavior, particularly as a leader. Known for his candid nature, Ndume asserted that the funds distributed were simply part of their routine entitlement, devoid of any special treatment.
Ndume clarified, “When an employee takes leave, it’s customary to receive a leave grant. The money we received was in line with that practice—neither extraordinary nor remarkable. All senators were granted N2 million. It pains me to say this, but Akpabio is the source of this unnecessary uproar.”
He went on to highlight the essence of the matter, noting that Akpabio’s statement falsely portrayed the payment as unique or substantial. He questioned the significance of receiving a N2 million allowance, emphasizing the need for accurate representation and responsible leadership.
Ndume’s frustration was palpable as he continued, “I immediately cautioned him about his ill-advised comments. It’s truly disappointing to witness such behavior from an elder. In fact, we are considering taking serious action against him if he persists in making reckless statements and treating us as if we were children.”..[CONTINUE READING HERE]
