Pyramids FC of Egypt claimed their maiden CAF Champions League title on Sunday, defeating South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in Cairo to seal a 3-2 aggregate victory.
In just their second appearance in Africa’s top club competition, Pyramids built on a 1-1 first-leg draw in Pretoria with goals from Fiston Mayele in the 23rd minute and Ahmed Samy in the 56th.
Sundowns’ Iqraam Rayners pulled one back in the 75th, but the visitors couldn’t find the decisive second goal needed to win on away goals.
Despite usually playing before sparse crowds, Pyramids managed to draw roughly 15,000 fans half the capacity of their 30,000-seat home ground—for the final.
Sundowns showed urgency late in the match but lacked cutting edge, having struggled to find rhythm for much of the game.
Both teams made a single change from the first leg. Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic opted to start former Premier League winger Ramadan Sobhi over top scorer Ibrahim Adel.
