The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has appealed to the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Unexplained Wealth Bill, which has been pending since the Ninth Assembly. Mr. Olukoyede made this plea at a national conference on public accounts and fiscal governance.
The EFCC boss highlighted the commission’s ongoing investigation into the extractive industry, particularly the oil and gas sector, revealing shocking discoveries of corruption.
He emphasized the strong link between resource mismanagement and insecurity, citing examples of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism fueled by corrupt practices and fund diversion.
Mr. Olukoyede urged lawmakers to pass the Unexplained Wealth Bill, stressing that it would hold individuals accountable for their assets.
He cited a case where a ministry worker’s assets far exceeded their legitimate earnings, yet proving a predicate offense was required before action could be taken.
The EFCC chairman called on Nigerians to put aside their differences and work together to block revenue leakage and salvage the economy.
He warned that failing to seize the opportunity presented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to tackle corruption could spell disaster for the country.
