ECOWAS Condemns Killing of Nigerien Soldiers and Urges Restoration of Constitutional Order
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) strongly condemns the recent attack that resulted in the tragic loss of at least seventeen Nigerien soldiers near the border with Mali. Expressing its grief over this incident, ECOWAS highlighted the fragile state of the country following the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum by the junta.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, ECOWAS emphasized the importance of restoring constitutional order and complying with its directives. The regional bloc called upon the military leadership of Niger, specifically the CNSP, to prioritize the nation’s security by reinstating the constitutional framework.
The statement reads, “ECOWAS has learned with profound sadness of the series of armed group attacks in the Republic of Niger, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of several Nigerien soldiers. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people of Niger and the bereaved families of the fallen soldiers.”
“ECOWAS urgently appeals to the CNSP-military leadership in Niger to restore constitutional order, thus enabling the nation to address its security challenges. The country’s stability has been increasingly compromised since the attempted coup against the democratically elected President, H.E. Mohamed Bazoum.”
Despite ECOWAS’ call for the return of democracy and stability, the junta has shown resistance to these demands, remaining steadfast in their stance, even in the face of pressure from ECOWAS and international partners.
The situation underscores the critical importance of restoring democratic governance and ensuring the security and well-being of the people of Niger.
