The Economic Community of West African States has denounced what it termed an attempted military takeover in Benin Republic. Tensions rose on Sunday after reports of gunfire and unrest in parts of Cotonou, following a broadcast by soldiers claiming to have overthrown President Patrice Talon.
The incident began early Sunday, December 7, when a group calling itself the “Military Committee for Refoundation” announced on state television that Talon had been removed from office.
In a statement, ECOWAS reaffirmed support for Benin’s constitutional order and praised loyalist troops for efforts to restore stability. The regional body warned that those behind the coup attempt would be held responsible for any loss of life or destruction of property.
ECOWAS emphasized its readiness to assist Benin “in all forms necessary,” including the potential deployment of its regional standby force.
President Talon’s office confirmed his safety and stated that the regular army had reestablished control.
