Eclipse mania hit North America on Monday as tens of millions of people witnessed an amazing celestial show that presented a unique opportunity for business and science, as well as a reason to celebrate.
At 11:07 a.m. local time (1807 GMT), the Moon’s shadow completely obscured the Pacific coast of Mexico. It then traveled at supersonic speed across the United States and back to the ocean over the Atlantic coast of Canada less than an hour and a half after landing.
Along the eclipse’s “path of totality,” where the Moon could be seen totally blocking the Sun for up to a few minutes – weather allowing – celebrations, watching parties, and even large-scale weddings were scheduled.
In order to see the eclipse up close from the resort town of Mazatlan, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador traveled to Sinaloa. He described the occasion as a “very beautiful, unforgettable day.”
