Doctors Suspend Planned Strike After Tense Talks, Give FG 21-Day Ultimatum To Address Lingering Issues

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its proposed nationwide strike following a heated emergency meeting that lasted over 12 hours between Saturday, July 26, and early Sunday, July 27, 2025.

The association had previously vowed to embark on industrial action over the contentious circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which allegedly breached prior agreements on revised medical allowances.

Rather than proceed with the strike, the NMA has issued a fresh 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to fully implement their demands, including the adjusted Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and hazard allowances.

The association revealed that a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the meeting, though members expressed concern that it was endorsed by lower-ranking officials rather than ministers or permanent secretaries, which may weaken its enforceability.

According to sources at the meeting, a large section of delegates initially supported an immediate strike but later agreed to a temporary suspension to allow the government to act.

The NMA warned that failure to implement the agreements within the stipulated period would lead to the activation of full strike action, disrupting healthcare services nationwide.
