According to Angel di Maria, the Juventus forward, Paris Saint-Germain overlooked Lionel Messi and gave Kylian Mbappe excessive power at the club.
Di Maria, who played alongside both Messi and Mbappe during his time at PSG, believes that the French team placed too much responsibility on the young French striker by offering him a lucrative contract last year, while disregarding the Argentina captain.
It is worth noting that Mbappe was on the verge of signing for Real Madrid last summer when his contract with PSG was set to expire. However, the Ligue 1 champions presented him with a new contract, which made him the world’s highest-paid footballer at the time. This was surpassed by Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo after he moved to Al-Nassr in December 2022.
In an interview with ESPN Argentina, the former Manchester United winger expressed his thoughts on the matter, as reported by GOAL:
“I think France, in general, have given [Kylian] Mbappe a lot of responsibility. The people, the president, PSG. They made him stay when he could’ve left and gave him all the power to be him and no one else.
“But there is a big difference, they gave him all that power with the best in history [Lionel Messi] next to him.”
“I think they gave him all that power and strength because he is French, he was born there, won a World Cup and has an extraordinary career ahead of him. But all that aside, when I was at PSG, he was a good boy and I don’t think he has changed so much.”
