Court Grants Bail to Seun Kuti with a 48-Hour Deadline for Police Investigation

  • Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been granted bail by a Magistrate Court in Yaba.
  • The bail conditions require two sureties who own properties in Lagos State.
  • The court has instructed the police to complete their investigation within 48 hours.

In a significant development, Seun Kuti, the renowned Afrobeat musician, has been granted bail by the Magistrate Court in Yaba.

The court ruling mandates that the defendant must present two sureties who possess landed properties within Lagos State.

Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun, presiding over the case, has also issued a directive to the police, giving them a deadline of 48 hours to conclude their investigation.

Seun Kuti faced charges of assaulting a police officer, an offense that goes against Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act.

The police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, requested that the court remand the defendant for a period of 21 days. The intention behind this was to provide ample time for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prepare the necessary legal advice.

However, the defense counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), opposed this plea during his argument.

Olumide-Fusika implored the court not to remand his client, stating that he had no knowledge of any such application being made.

Seun Kuti, the son of the legendary Fela Kuti, was arrested following an altercation where he allegedly slapped a police officer after his vehicle was stopped on Third Mainland Bridge.

During questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, Kuti chose not to provide any voluntary statement.

His legal representative further criticized the actions of police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, who assumed the role of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) by sharing details of his investigative work in the media.

The recent court decision to grant bail to Seun Kuti, coupled with the 48-hour timeframe for the completion of the police investigation, signifies a pivotal turn in the case.
