Chevron Denies Involvement in Niger Delta Oil Theft Allegations

Chevron Nigeria Limited has vehemently refuted allegations connecting the company to the ongoing oil theft crisis in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

Chevron serves as the operator of the joint venture formed between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and CNL – NNPCL/CNL JV, which places the company in direct and indirect involvement in Nigeria’s oil industry.

Recent online media reports implicated Chevron, along with another independent oil company, in facilitating oil theft within the Niger Delta creeks.

These allegations gained widespread attention following the Federal Government’s declaration that Nigeria had incurred substantial economic losses of N2.3 trillion over the past year due to illicit shipments of stolen crude oil.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) reported that it identified 11 vessels engaged in violations of the Automatic Identification System, with notifications sent to the Navy.

In July, the Navy intercepted an 800,000-liter vessel transporting stolen crude oil en route to Cameroon.

Additionally, Nigeria has experienced significant oil export losses due to rampant oil theft in the Niger Delta, which has adversely impacted the country’s OPEC quota.

In response to the accusations implicating Chevron in the oil theft situation, the company issued a press statement in Warri, Delta State, on Saturday, September 9, to refute the claims.

Esimaje Brikinn, the General Manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs at Chevron, categorically dismissed the allegations as “unfounded, inaccurate, and lacking any factual basis.”

On the contrary, Chevron asserted its unwavering commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards and business principles.
