A Federal Capital Territory High Court has issued an order to the Department of State Services (DSS) to bring criminal charges against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), if they have any allegations against him.
The presiding judge, Hamza Muazu, also ruled that if Emefiele is not taken to a competent court within one week, he should be released on bail.
The suspension of Godwin Emefiele was announced by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, along with a directive to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate. Subsequently, the DSS revealed that Emefiele was in their custody for “some investigative reasons.”
Seeking to protect his fundamental rights, Emefiele filed a lawsuit against the DSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) through his lawyer, Joseph Daudu. The suit aimed to enforce Emefiele’s rights amidst his detention by the DSS.
With the recent court order, the DSS has been instructed to either bring criminal charges against Emefiele or release him on bail within the given timeframe.
The decision emphasizes the importance of following due process and ensuring the protection of individuals’ rights, even in cases involving high-ranking officials. The outcome of this situation will undoubtedly be closely monitored by the public and stakeholders in Nigeria’s financial sector.
