Burkina Faso, under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has suspended a project that released genetically modified mosquitoes aimed at eradicating malaria and other insect-borne diseases.
The decision comes after public concern over the safety and ethics of the initiative funded by US billionaire Bill Gates.
Traoré, the country’s interim president since October 2022, has emphasized national sovereignty and the need for locally led health interventions.
His government cited a lack of proper consultation and potential ecological risks as key reasons for halting the project.
The suspension highlights the challenges of implementing advanced biotechnology in West Africa, balancing innovation with public trust and regulatory oversight.
