Garba Shehu, the spokesperson for the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, clarified on Thursday that Buhari did not advise his successor, President Bola Tinubu, against investigating ministers and aides who served in the previous administration.
Shehu took to Twitter to address the issue, sharing a photo of both leaders along with the caption, ‘What Buhari Didn’t Say To President Tinubu.’
Refuting a report that suggested Tinubu had assured Buhari that he and his close aides would be exempt from any corruption investigations, Shehu stated that the former President was actually in London to rest during their supposed meeting. He further clarified that no one else was present in the room when Tinubu met with Buhari.
According to Shehu, Buhari prefers to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible to avoid distracting the new administration. Initially, he had returned home to Daura in the hopes of finding the peace and quiet he desired. However, due to the constant influx of visitors day and night, he had to move to a more secluded location.
“Buhari’s primary desire is to have the necessary rest he requires, while also allowing the Tinubu administration to work in a conducive atmosphere to fulfill the promises they made to the Nigerian people.”
