Professional football is about to introduce a blue card as part of sin-bin experiments, which will be the first new card color to be extensively used in fifty years.
The International Football Association Board will make the groundbreaking announcement on Friday as part of new regulations that would cause players to be benched for ten minutes if they intentionally foul or act disrespectfully toward a match referee.
Players will now be sent out if they receive two blue cards in a game or a combination of a blue and a yellow card, which will bring a new twist to dismissals according to the procedures.
According to the source, elite trials may start as early as the summer, but initial testing will not include elite competitors.
FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup matches might therefore be included in trials; the FA is allegedly thinking of offering to test the competitions for the upcoming season.
This season, blue cards have been used in grassroots football in Wales as part of a sin-bin experiment. The color was chosen to make it easy to distinguish from yellow or red cards.
