In a surprising turn of events, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the immediate suspension of Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This decision was communicated by Willie Bassey, a Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, in a statement released on Friday night.
The suspension of Governor Emefiele is said to be connected to an ongoing investigation into his office and the planned reforms in Nigeria’s financial sector.
According to the statement, Mr. Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will assume the role of acting Central Bank Governor during the investigation and reform process.
