With Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), still in detention, President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Bianca Ojukwu as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs has stirred conversations. Many see this as more than just a cabinet reshuffle—it feels like a step toward mending the rift between the Southeast and the rest of Nigeria.
According to FRESHREPORTERS NEWS, Tinubu’s midterm cabinet shake-up wasn’t minor. He brought in five new ministers, sacked seven others, and shuffled around ten more to fresh portfolios.
Bianca now joins other ministers from the Southeast, including Doris Uzoka-Anite (Finance), Uche Nnaji (Innovation, Science, and Technology), and David Umahi (Works)…[READ MORE HERE]>>
A Move Toward Healing Old Wounds
Some believe Bianca’s appointment is a smart political move. Katchi Ononuju, Director General of the Heritage Centre think tank, pointed out that the president knows the country needs healing. Ononuju told DAILY POST, “The President understands now that what brought him to office was a political party, and he’s now working on an attempt to heal the country.”
He added, “So, the strategies previously used are no longer effective as he’s now seeking unity. Don’t forget he’s aiming for a second term, so appointing Bianca is understandable.”
But Ononuju was quick to add a note of caution: “Bianca is not a magic wand. Inclusion comes through actions, not just appointments. Bianca, at best, represents a memory—not the realities facing people alive today.”
“The president’s decision to bring her in is thoughtful, but it’s just a start. Will he back it up with actions? Appointments alone don’t change things—actions must follow. The ministers who were removed earlier would have naturally aligned if the president had set a clear example.”
“Even with Bianca’s appointment, he must treat her in a way that her people feel genuinely included. That takes more than nice words. Buhari made promises too, but his actions often disappointed, sometimes even insulted.”
“Right now, the country is divided and in need of healing. Bianca’s role shows that Tinubu recognizes this, but symbolic appointments alone won’t do the trick. There has to be follow-through.”…[READ MORE HERE]>>
Kanu’s Release: A Political Solution Within Reach?
Ononuju wasn’t optimistic about Bianca’s ability to directly influence Kanu’s release. He insisted that the government alone holds the key to solving that issue.
“A political solution can only be facilitated if the government agrees to it, and it has nothing to do with Bianca—it’s in the government’s hands,” he explained.
He also pointed out that regional leaders have already met with the Minister of Justice to push for Kanu’s negotiated release, and the minister seemed open to the idea. “Let’s wait and see what they decide,” Ononuju suggested.
“The fuss over Bianca’s appointment isn’t the issue here. The government needs to do the right thing. They’ve granted negotiated releases before—people like Bodejo and Uwazurike, who were involved in similar agitations.”
“If Kanu promises to let go of his past actions, a negotiated release shouldn’t be too much to ask. It’s worked before, and it can work again, just like it did with others.”
“Kanu’s situation is personal, a matter between him and the state. We’ve had leaders in the past who negotiated releases. Kanu has already expressed his willingness to engage in such talks.”
Ononuju pointed to other cases, saying, “We’ve seen negotiated releases with Asari Dokubo and Abdullahi Bello Badejo—the man from Niger Republic who’s been active within Nigeria, supporting the Fulani militia. Though registered in Bauchi, I know for a fact that Badejo’s actually from Niger Republic.”
“This just shows how porous Nigeria’s borders are. People like Badejo operated freely in Benue State, waging conflict for eight years until Tinubu’s government finally took action.”
Ononuju added, “These militias came in during Buhari’s administration, seeking access to water and grazing land. The Ministry of Defence has failed to address this ethnic violence, and even with the recent cabinet reshuffle, it’s clear much more needs to be done.”
Could Tinubu Set Kanu Free?
Ononuju believes Tinubu could release Kanu if he wanted to, noting that the president might use the opportunity to break away from Buhari’s divisive legacy.
“There’s a real possibility that Tinubu might release Kanu at any time; there are no obstacles,” he said. “Kanu is a product of Buhari’s weaponized nepotism, and now that Buhari’s gone, Kanu, too, should be free.”
“Without Buhari’s policies, Kanu wouldn’t have had the fuel for his rhetoric. Both Kanu and Buhari belong to the past. It’s time to move on and work toward peace in the Southeast.”
Ononuju stressed the importance of inclusion. “The Southeast holds 74% of Nigeria’s gas reserves—they don’t need conflict; they need inclusion. The economic resilience of the Igbos after the civil war shouldn’t be seen as a threat.”
“Going back to Buhari’s ways, using military force like he did, would be a big mistake. Now that Buhari is out of the picture, we need genuine healing, not a continuation of his old policies.”…[READ MORE HERE]>>
Bianca’s Role in Shaping Foreign Policy
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s lead counsel, believes Bianca is well-positioned to advise Tinubu on Kanu’s release.
“As the new Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, she is now in a position to advise the President on the damage that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention is doing to Nigeria’s image globally,” Ejimakor told DAILY POST.
He added, “Lady Bianca has publicly called for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, reiterating it earlier this month in the United States during a keynote address to the American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID). She’s astute enough to understand this and honorable enough to strongly communicate this to the President without hesitation.”
A Political Play That Could Shape Tinubu’s Legacy
Madubuachi Idam, an activist lawyer, described Bianca’s appointment as a smart political move for the Southeast.
He told reporters, “The appointment of Bianca Ojukwu as a Minister in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a strategic and commendable political decision by President Tinubu’s administration.”
Idam argued that Bianca’s appointment, coupled with Kanu’s release, would improve Tinubu’s standing in the Southeast. “The President should take it a step further by releasing Mr. Kanu,” he advised.
However, Idam also criticized Tinubu’s repeated reshuffles without assigning key portfolios to experts. “It’s like rearranging chairs on the deck of a sinking ship—beautiful but pointless. What we need are technocrats with real skills.”
He didn’t mince words about the current state of the country either. “The hardship in Nigeria is real,” Idam said. “We need real solutions, not just window dressing that looks good but does nothing.”…[READ MORE HERE]>>
