Before 419 began in Nigeria, I engaged in bank theft as a scammer – Charly Boy

Charles Oputa, Nigerian famous Activist, professionally known as Charly Boy has revealed that he used to be a thief, scamming banks even before 419 became popular in the country.

He stressed that the action was foolish and unwise, saying that he did not support such behavior.

He revealed this during a recent episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’, which was posted on YouTube on Monday, 5th of February, 2024.

Charly Boy said:

“I used to be a thief. I no steal anybody thing personally o but I was scamming banks even before una begin hear 419, I don do small; that’s the worst. Judging how I was brought up, that is the worst.

“If it was in Nigeria, it wasn’t in Nigeria o, I could only do these things because I was away from my parents’ prying eyes. So it was like, ‘na only me dey na’ I had nobody to answer to, nobody to command me and I wanted to get my own, though that wasn’t the right way and I don’t advocate that people should… I was just stupid and dumb at the time.

According to Wikipedia, a ‘419’ scam or ‘Advance-fee’ scam typically involves promising the victim a significant share of a large sum of money, in return for a small up-front payment, which the fraudster claims will be used to obtain the large sum.
