A seven-month-old baby boy named Habibu was discovered sleeping on his deceased mother’s back, a full day after she fell victim to a brutal attack by bandits on the Pandogari-Allawa road. The incident occurred just a day before the Sallah festival, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
According to information gathered by City & Crime, the bandits had blocked the road, and as unsuspecting passengers passed by, they opened fire, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.
Among the victims was Hauwa Aliyu, an SS 2 student from the prestigious Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College in Minna, as well as the mother of the infant boy.
Providing further details, Jibril Allawa, President of the Lakpma Youth Assembly, shared a miraculous twist amidst the tragedy. “The baby was one of the survivors of the attack, which claimed six lives. When vigilantes arrived the following day to remove the remains of the victims, they discovered the baby peacefully sleeping on his deceased mother’s back.”
The incident, which took place on June 27, has left the community in shock and mourning. Allawa recalled the last conversation with one of the victims, Maryam, who had expressed her desire to celebrate Sallah with her family. “We advised her to stay in school and celebrate there, but she insisted on coming home to be with us,” he said.
Another survivor, Abubakar Ismail, a 16-year-old, managed to escape the gunfire, despite sustaining injuries to his chest. He bravely ran for some distance before being rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the pervasive issue of banditry and insecurity plaguing certain regions of Nigeria. Authorities have been urged to intensify efforts in tackling these criminal activities and ensuring the safety of citizens, especially during festive periods when travel and celebrations are more prevalent.
