The memories of that grim day were etched deeply in the minds of the townspeople. Awgbu had become the target of a vicious attack, leading to the untimely demise of five of its indigenes.

The toll of destruction was immense, with properties worth more than N10,000,000 reduced to ashes and ruins.

Providing a chilling account of the incident, Mr. Emmanuel Akidi, the current President General of Awgbu, recounted the series of events that unfolded.

He revealed that on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 17, 2023, a commercial tricycle (commonly known as a “Keke”) was pursued into Awgbu town from Amaokpala by a group of motorcyclists who claimed that the occupants were armed robbers.

This accusation was accompanied by the sound of gunshots resonating through the air.

Driven by a mix of fear and curiosity, a large crowd gathered to join the pursuit, ultimately leading to a chaotic scene. Amidst the chaos, three of the tricycle’s occupants were apprehended. Swift action from the Awgbu Vigilante service managed to rescue one individual, who was promptly handed over to the police for further investigation.

However, the situation quickly spiraled out of control. The crowd, fueled by anger and a sense of justice, took matters into their own hands with the remaining two captives.

They were forcefully taken to the Awgbu-Agulu boundary and subjected to an act of extrajudicial violence, leading to their tragic demise.

Tragically, the events of the following day, May 18, 2023, brought even greater horrors to Awgbu. A group of hoodlums, reportedly arriving from the Awka axis in their kekes, unleashed a brutal attack on the town.

Eyewitnesses vividly recalled the horrifying scenes: the market set ablaze, four innocent lives ruthlessly taken by gunfire, and one helpless individual burned alive within their shop, transforming it into a tomb of agony.

As Awgbu bids farewell to the souls lost in this senseless act of violence, they pray for peace and healing to envelop their community once more.

The scars left by these tragic events serve as a reminder of the darkness that can pervade even the most peaceful of places.
