The Abia State Government has ordered immediate structural integrity tests on all buildings above two floors across the state.
This directive follows the collapse of a three-storey building in Umuahia on Saturday, July 26, which prompted emergency investigations and the sealing of surrounding structures linked to the same developer.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, July 29, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Kingsley Agomoh, said the tests would be compulsory for both existing and upcoming high-rise structures.
He emphasized that building permits for new developments will now be strictly tied to adherence to safety and engineering standards. Agomoh warned that any developers or officials found guilty of negligence or compromise would face severe sanctions.
In addition to this safety measure, the Ministry of Lands and Housing has begun aerial imagery and 2D mapping of Umuahia and Aba to aid urban planning and development control.
According to Agomoh, the mapping project will strengthen enforcement capacity, ensure orderly growth, and help the government monitor construction compliance in real time.
