Ahead of 2027, Sule Lamido Rules Out PDP Merger, Points to Strategic Alliances

Amid deepening internal crisis, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, has clarified that the party is not seeking a full-scale merger or coalition with other political entities. Instead, he announced the party is pursuing targeted strategic alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lamido made these statements while addressing a PDP caucus meeting at his residence, as the party grapples with significant internal divisions. He emphasized that the decision followed extensive consultations with major party elders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Crucially, Lamido identified four powerful figures whose cooperation is essential to resolving the PDP’s internal strife: Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. He asserted that these leaders hold the key to ending the party’s current turmoil if they choose to act.

Lamido framed the alliance strategy, particularly within his home state of Jigawa, as a practical step to rebuild the party’s electoral strength. He called on all PDP members to maintain patience and unity, assuring them that high-level negotiations are actively underway at the national level. He pointed to a critical meeting scheduled for December 17 as a potential milestone that could set a definitive new direction for the party’s future.
