A coordinated security effort has resulted in the rescue of dozens of worshippers who were abducted from a church in Kaduna State last month.
Governor Uba Sani confirmed on Wednesday that 82 victims have now regained their freedom following the joint operation by the Kaduna State Government, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). A security source indicated that over 100 people, including young children, were actually liberated during the mission.
Bandits had attacked a church service in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area, on January 18, kidnapping 177 congregants. Prior to this latest operation, 11 victims had reportedly been freed, leaving 166 in captivity.
Governor Sani made the announcement during a visit to a shelter in Kaduna where the rescued individuals are receiving medical treatment and psychological support. He expressed sympathy for the victims’ traumatic ordeal and assured the Kurmin Wali community that work continues to secure the release of those still held.
The governor voiced confidence that the remaining captives would be freed within days. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating banditry and kidnapping in the state, pledging to spare no effort to bring every victim home safely.
Sani also praised the DSS, ONSA, and other security agencies for their bravery, professionalism, and swift action. He urged residents to maintain cooperation with security forces by providing timely and reliable information to help restore lasting peace to the region.
