NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina Gusso, and their two young children have died in a tragic plane crash in North Carolina. The accident occurred on December 18 when their private aircraft crashed during a landing attempt in Statesville.
The victims include the couple’s 5-year-old son Ryder and 14-year-old daughter Emma (Biffle’s daughter from a previous marriage). Two other individuals were also on board the flight.
Official Confirmation and Investigation
U.S. Congressman Richard Hudson confirmed the deaths on social media, paying tribute to Biffle as “a great NASCAR champion who thrilled millions of fans” and “an extraordinary person remembered for his service to others as much as for his fearlessness on the track.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated the aircraft was a Cessna C550, owned by GB Aviation Leasing LLC and contracted to Biffle. The crash scene is being managed by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and the FAA. The cause remains under official investigation.
Weather Conditions a Key Factor
Preliminary reports point to severe weather as a significant factor. At the time of the accident, the Statesville airport was experiencing heavy drizzle, a very low cloud ceiling of approximately 400 feet, and visibility reduced to less than two miles, according to weather analysis.
The devastating loss has sent shockwaves through the global motorsports community, where Biffle is being remembered for his stellar racing career and his commitment to charitable work off the track.
