Hospital Denies Singer Nanyah D!ed Due to Lack of Anti-Venom, Cites Severe Neurotoxicity

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja, has refuted claims that the death of singer Ifunanya ‘Nanyah’ Nwagene resulted from a lack of anti-snake venom, asserting she succumbed to severe neurotoxic complications despite receiving immediate medical care.

In a statement released on Sunday, the hospital’s Head of Clinical Service, Dr. Bioku Muftau, described the 25-year-old’s passing as a tragic event. He clarified that Nwagene was promptly attended to upon arrival on January 31, 2026, and that emergency treatment, including resuscitation, IV fluids, oxygen, and the administration of a polyvalent snake antivenom, was administered.

The hospital stated that doctors determined the singer had already developed severe neurotoxic effects from the bite. Plans were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but her condition deteriorated rapidly before the transfer could occur. Despite aggressive resuscitation efforts, including CPR, she could not be revived.

The FMC firmly rejected allegations that a shortage of anti-venom or inadequate staff response caused her death, labeling such reports as misleading. “The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation,” the statement read. The hospital affirmed its commitment to transparency and high-quality patient care.

The public was urged to rely on verified information rather than social media speculation, with the hospital expressing openness to further inquiries about the incident.

This official account contradicts earlier reports which suggested Nanyah was turned away from multiple hospitals due to a lack of anti-venom after being bitten by a snake at her Abuja residence.
