The Ghanaian government has deported 68 foreign nationals from its Ashanti Region, including 42 Nigerians, following court convictions for offenses including prostitution and fraud.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, confirmed the action on social media. The deportees comprised 42 Nigerians, 13 Cameroonians, 3 Ivorians, 3 Burkinabe nationals, and 7 Benin nationals, all found guilty by various courts in connection with illegal activities such as involvement with Q-Net (a multi-level marketing company), prostitution, and other crimes.
In his statement, Amoakohene commended the Ghana Immigration Service for its role. “I commend the Ghana Immigration Service for its professionalism, diligence, and firm commitment to enforcing our immigration laws, while upholding due process and human dignity,” he said. “Their collaboration with the courts and other security agencies continues to strengthen public safety, protect vulnerable persons, and preserve law and order in the region.”
This wave of deportations occurs against a backdrop of increased international reports detailing heightened scrutiny and mass arrests of Nigerian citizens residing in various countries abroad.
