Former Chelsea and Brazil playmaker Oscar has announced his retirement from professional football at age 34, a decision prompted by significant health concerns after a cardiac incident.
The midfielder, who returned to his childhood club, São Paulo, in early 2025, collapsed during a routine training session in November of the same year. He was later diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes fainting due to a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure.
Although there was initial hope for a return to the pitch, Oscar stated he decided to prioritize his long-term well-being following extensive discussions with his family and doctors.
Oscar’s career began at São Paulo before he gained prominence at Internacional, leading to a high-profile £19 million transfer to Chelsea in 2012. He quickly became a key figure at Stamford Bridge, cementing his status as a fan favorite over several successful seasons.
His return to São Paulo this year on a three-year contract was cut short, having contributed two goals and five assists in 21 appearances before his health episode. In a farewell statement, Oscar expressed immense gratitude for all football had given him but stressed that his health and family are now his primary focus. São Paulo’s management has expressed a desire to offer him a non-playing role at the club, as tributes honor his legacy as one of Brazil’s most talented midfielders of his era.
