UK-based Nigerian cleric Tobi Adegboyega has sparked online conversation by standing by his previous statement that the white man wrote the Bible, while emphasising that questioning scripture is essential for a genuine understanding of faith.
Speaking during a sermon, Adegboyega addressed criticisms of his remarks, clarifying that despite debates surrounding them, the scripture remains the foundation of his teachings.
“People said that I said the white person wrote the Bible. I said what I said but we still use it. The Bible, the scripture is the authority that we stand on,” he said.
According to him, critical thinking is necessary for genuine spirituality. “You’ve never seen a movement of young people in hundreds, speaking and preaching from the Bible on a daily basis,” he said.
The pastor explained that he personally examined and questioned the scripture while growing in faith, insisting that believers should not be afraid to interrogate what they believe.
“I probed the Bible in order to know the word. I will not accept something I can’t probe. I am not going to be like our parents’ generation who ask no question, so they don’t know,” he added.
He further criticised what he described as a culture of unquestioned religious practices, saying it often leads to a society that is religious but lacks true spirituality.
“Our parents create a religious country that has no spirituality. We read the Bible and we do what is in it.”
