NPF mourn former IGP Solomon Arase

The Nigeria Police Force has announced with deep sorrow the passing of the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police and immediate past Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Ehigiator Arase, who died in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.

According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the news of Arase’s passing was officially conveyed to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, by the late IGP’s son, Solomon Osabohien Arase Jnr.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government of Edo State, Arase had an illustrious academic and professional career. He earned degrees in Political Science, Law, and a in Public Law.

Enlisted into the Police Force on December 1, 1981, he rose through the ranks to serve in key positions, including Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State, pioneer AIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau, and DIG, FCID.

He was appointed Inspector-General of Police in April 2015 and retired in June 2016.

Beyond his policing career, Arase contributed significantly to reforms in the Force, including establishing the Complaint Response Unit to improve accountability and protect citizens’ rights.

Through the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF), he also supported scholarships for indigent students and children of deceased police officers.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, while paying a condolence visit to the family in Abuja, described Arase as a dedicated reformer and statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire the Force and the nation.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the late IGP, praying for comfort and peace during this time of grief.

“The memory of IGP Arase will forever remain etched in the heart of the Force and the country he so faithfully served,” the statement noted.
