Operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily suspended on Saturday after an Iranian drone strike hit an area near the airport’s terminals, triggering panic at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates said air defence systems were activated as the alert sounded, forcing passengers awaiting flights to quickly move into train tunnels within the massive airport complex for safety.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion above the airport. One witness told AFP that the blast was followed by a cloud of smoke rising into the air. Several residents also told the Associated Press they heard multiple explosions across the city of Dubai.
Major airline Emirates confirmed the disruption, announcing that “all flights to and from Dubai have been suspended until further notice.”
The airline added that customers scheduled to travel between February 28 and March 31 can either rebook their trips or request refunds.
Security around critical infrastructure across the UAE has been tightened as authorities assess the situation.
