The National Sports Commission (NSC) has intervened to prevent US-based sprinter Favour Ofili from switching her international allegiance to Turkey, insisting she remains a Nigerian athlete bound to represent the country.
A senior NSC official told The Guardian that Ofili, who was among the elite athletes receiving training grants from the commission last year, cannot compete for another nation until September 2028. The NSC has officially communicated this position to World Athletics.
Ofili, the only Nigerian woman to have clocked under 22 seconds in the 200m (21.96s), has represented Nigeria at major international competitions, including the Youth Olympics (2019), World Championships (2019, 2023), Commonwealth Games (2022), and the Paris 2024 Olympics. She is expected to be part of Nigeria’s contingent at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The NSC also dismissed rumours that sprinter Favour Ashe is considering a switch to represent Qatar.
In related remarks, Nigerian sprint legend Mary Onyali highlighted the importance of loyalty, recalling how she rejected offers from four countries during her career, reaffirming her dedication to representing Nigeria throughout her athletic journey.
