Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Chelsea, has responded to Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, who claimed the London club was playing defensive football.
After a 4-0 thrashing of Juventus on Tuesday night, the German said he pays no attention to suggestions that the Champions League holders are too defensive and always puts his team out to score goals.
Chelsea defeated Juventus with a dominant performance at Stamford Bridge, with Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, and Callum Hudson-Odoi all scoring before Timo Werner scored late.
Pochettino, whose side have been rather more porous, described Chelsea in somewhat unflattering terms, saying, “Chelsea have a defensive team. They participate in transition and on the field.
But Tuchel insisted he puts as much emphasis on attacking as defending when asked if it was frustrating to hear Chelsea described as defensive, “I don’t listen too much to what people say about us,” he said.
“I feel into my team and I feel into our staff with what we feel comfortable [with] and I felt from day one very brave in our approach to defending.
“We had instantly a lot of ball possession always so from there we tried to create chances and to be dangerous.
“But we are not so worried about what people say about us. We want to be strong in all parts of this game. It is a very complex game: some moments you have to defend strong and some you find the spaces to attack a bit easier than in other moments.”
Chelsea are playing Manchester United in their next match in the Premier League and will hope to maintain their lead in the league table.
