Tottenham Hotspur Football Club sack Jose Mourinho as the clubs head coach today, April 19.
Mourinho who was appointed in place of Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019, guided Spurs to a Europa League place in his first season despite a host of injuries to key players.
Despite the shortcomings in that period, Mourinho’s departure, and particularly the timing of it, came as a surprise.
Sources claim the Portuguese’s package will not go over £20million due to performance related clauses in his contract linked to European qualification and his £10million-a-season salary.
Chairman of Tottenham, Daniel Levy, said:
“Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
