Disagreements about proposed reforms to the legislature caused a scuffle among the members of Taiwan’s parliament, resulting in chaos.
Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Chung Chia-pin grabbed main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Chen Ching-hui during the voting for the Parliament reform bill.
The confrontation stemmed from KMT’s accusation that DPP lawmakers are acting as a rubber stamp for the executive branch especially concerning the “Five Acts of Parliamentary Reform.”
It reached a point where members leapt over tables and pulled colleagues to the floor, causing a curtain in the chamber to get ripped. One person was also rushed to the hospital after crawling over other members and then falling on his head.
The incident happened just days before the country’s new President-elect Lai Ching-te is set to take office on May 20. While he emerged victorious during the elections held in January, his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lost its majority in parliament. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
