Nigerian Mobile network operators have been ordered to stop the sale and activation of new SIM cards in the country.
The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, gave the directives on Wednesday, December 9 to allow it audit the Subscriber Registration Database.
The new directives were issued in a statement by the Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde.
The statement said the directives was absolutely necessary for operators to comply until the audit exercise had been concluded.
He said the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, directed the commission to embark on an audit of the Subscriber Registration Database.
However, he said an exemption might be granted following approval from the Federal Government through the commission, warning that non-compliance with the directive would be met with strict sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating license.
