Child marriage which is prevalent in Saudi Arabia has been banned and a new minimum age limit has been placed on all marriages.
The country’s Ministry of Justice who made the announcement today prohibits marriage of persons under 18 years.
Announcing the prohibition, the Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Sheikh Walid Al-Samaani said it set 18 years as the minimum age for marriage.
The minister issued the new directive in a circular sent to all the courts in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia earlier had no laws against child marriage because of the commonly-accepted practice of male guardianship over women.
