Prince Philip who was a member of the British royal family as the husband of Elizabeth is the 25th member of the Royal Family to be interred in the 200-year-old vault hidden beneath St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Though buried there, the Royal Vault will not be his final resting place. When the Queen dies, the Duke of Edinburgh will be transferred to the gothic church’s King George VI memorial chapel to lie alongside his devoted wife of 73 years.
There, they will be reunited and rest alongside the remains of the Queen’s father George VI, her mum the Queen Mother and sister Princess Margaret.
The Royal Vault – behind a set of iron gates and about 16ft underground – is the final resting place of a range of kings and queens.
It was created between 1804 and 1810 for George III, who died in 1820 and is one of three kings buried there.
