Prime Minister Escapes Assassination Attempt Shortly After African President Was Killed

  • Artel Henry, Haiti’s prime minister, narrowly escaped assassination during a national ceremony on Saturday, January 1.
  • It was held at a church in Gonaves to commemorate the country’s 218th anniversary of independence.
  • PM Henry was the target of the failed assassination attempt this is coming months after the president, Jovenel Mose, was killed by gunmen.

Haiti, Gonaves – During an event commemorating Haiti’s independence on Saturday, January 1, gunmen attempted but failed to assassinate Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

According to the New York Times, “bandits and terrorists” attempted to assassinate Henry at a church in Gonaves where the ceremony was held on Monday, January 3.

When the shooting began, Henry was forced to flee the scene and was placed in a vehicle by security agents. Although the number of people killed and injured in the attack, which the police described as the work of an armed group, local media reported that at least one person was killed and two others were injured.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said:

“An attempt has been made against me personally. My life has been put in the crosshairs.” 

Tensions mount as Haiti’s president, Jovenel Mose, is reported to have been assassinated. Meanwhile, reports emerged that Haiti’s president, Jovenel Mose, had been assassinated at his private residence in the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince, causing unrest in the country.
